On Saturday, April 20, the 2024 Iowa Legislative Session adjourned sine die. This means the legislative session is completed for the year.
This year, the legislative session was quiet for sportsmen. Only a handful of sportsmen-related bills were introduced, and two pro-sportsmen bills made it to the governor’s desk. Governor Kim Reynolds already signed House File 2464 into law on Friday, April 19th.
The Hawkeye state joins the growing number of states working to protect sportsmen’s credit card purchase privacy.
House File 2464 prohibits the assignment of a firearms code in a manner that distinguishes a firearm retailer from other retailers, thus preventing firearms, firearms accessories, and ammunition from being specifically singled out purchases with a credit card. The bill also prohibits a government entity from knowingly keeping or causing a record or registry of privately owned firearms or the owners of privately owned firearms to be kept.
House File 2556 was officially sent to Governor Reynold for consideration today. HF 2556 strengthens Iowa’s firearm preemption law, which prohibits any political subdivision of the state from enacting an ordinance, motion, resolution, policy, or amendment more severe than state law. This important bill provides an enforcement mechanism of a monetary value to damages resulting from a political subdivision of the state violating the state’s firearm preemption law.
Even though the 2024 legislative session is over, the Sportsmen’s Alliance will continue to monitor activities in the Hawkeye State. You never know when issues that sportsmen need to be aware of may arise.
