New Mexico’s ability to control rapidly growing coyote populations will be hamstringed if the state legislature approves newly introduced bill. Senate Bill 253 would outlaw any organized competition where the objective is to kill coyotes. While the bill is written to address organized contests, field trials and hunts would also be at risk.

Senate Bill 253 is completely unnecessary and would undermine wildlife management tools used to control the highly adaptable and growing coyote population. Organized coyote events do not threaten the health of the overall coyote population; but rather help keep it in check, which provides a public safety benefit and reduces losses by ranchers. In fact, the New Mexico coyote population is so large that no bag limit exists.
Contests, field trials and hunts simply provide another measure of controlling and managing the growing coyote population.
“Anti-hunting groups want you to believe there is something wrong with a coyote contest,” said Adam Wright, USSA’s associate director of state services. “But the truth is, they simply oppose all hunting and all predator management. Hunting and predator control contests serve a distinct public benefit. New Mexico sportsmen must make their voices heard in opposition to this pure anti-hunting bill.”
Senate Bill 253 is currently pending in the Senate Judiciary Committee. Sportsmen in New Mexico need to call members of the committee today. Ask them to vote NO on Senate Bill 253.
