We live in a day and age where the media perpetually blankets the truth with an arsenal of distorted facts and biased opinions. Hunting seems to be a favorite target among reporters as of late, but the Sportsmen’s Alliance isn’t standing idly by while news sources poison uneducated minds with skewed statistics and emotional statements.
Josh Brones, government affairs coordinator for western U.S. operations for the Sportsmen’s Alliance, recently set the record straight in regards to the spike in negative interactions between people and black bears in California.
While some “experts” solely blame drought and trash, Brones points to another factor – the passing of bill 1221 in 2012, which outlawed the use of hounds for hunting bears and bobcats.
With the passing of bill 1221, hunters and their hounds no longer educated bears through aversion conditioning – a process by which bears learn to avoid humans and dogs because of encounters during hunting season.
