The annual legislation to ban the sale of fur is back. On Wednesday, March 1, the Senate Commerce & Consumer Protection and Ways & Means Committee will be holding a joint committee hearing on Senate Bill 682.
This destructive bill works to decimate all trade in fur, leaving trappers and others who rely on fur products with no way to sustain their activities. The impacts will be felt far and wide, including on all-fur products and any items that utilize fur in production, such as fishing lures, boots, gloves or other clothing, jewelry, and toys.
Animal-rights extremists return every year saying the same thing, wearing and using fur is about the cruel treatment of animals. But SB 682 is really about kowtowing to animal-rights extremists and their so-called “feel-good” rhetoric. Legislators who support this extremism evidently want to tell citizens what they can and can’t wear or use in the Aloha State.
Committee members should know that animal-rights extremists cannot come into Hawai’i and dictate what you can and can’t wear or use under the ruse of protecting animals. They have not been shy of their real intent of ending outdoor activities like hunting and fishing, issue by issue and state by state across our great nation.
