On Thursday, May 18, the Senate passed House Bill 218, the “The Firearm Industry Responsibility Act.” Sadly, in a press release, Governor JB Pritzker has already stated his intent to sign this bill into law. Even though the Governor intends to sign HB 218 into law, please use our Take Action button to let the Governor know that you OPPOSE HB 218 and ask that he VETO the bill.
As we previously reported, HB 218, was fast-tracked through the legislative process, not giving Illinois sportsmen a chance to express their opposition to legislation that will do nothing to curb or reduce Illinois’ gun violence issues.
HB 218 will hold everyone, and anyone involved with firearms subject to civil liability if they fail to establish “reasonable control” over the criminal activities of others with a firearm. It is anybody’s guess what “reasonable” means, but knowing how the Attorney General feels about firearms, there is a very broad definition, with only the law-abiding facing a judge in civil court.
Illinois’ 2023 legislative session is far from over and the Sportsmen’s Alliance will continue to monitor the session and inform you when action is needed.
Don’t forget to share these emails with your family, friends, and fellow sportsmen, as sportsmen throughout the state must stay actively involved to defend our hunting, fishing, and trapping heritage for present and future generations to enjoy.
