The 2024 legislative session is scheduled to adjourn on Wednesday, May 8th and legislators are planning to work through the weekend.
Sadly, Governor Jared Polis signed SB24-066 into law on Wednesday, May 1st. This bill requires credit card companies to provide a merchant category code (MCC) for businesses that sell firearms and ammunition.
Unfortunately, we were not able to stop the gun-control majority from getting SB24-066 to the Governor, but there IS still time to try to stop several more anti-sportsmen bills that could be heard on the Senate floor at any time. Please use the Take Action button below to email your state Senator and ask him/her to vote “NO” on HB24-1270, HB24-1292, HB24-1349, and HB 1353. Your Senator will not know that you and the sportsmen community OPPOSE these bills unless you contact them and time is running out. They need to be reminded criminals are not affected by current laws and more laws only affect the law-abiding.
HB 24-1270 requires firearm owners to maintain a liability insurance policy that covers losses or damages to a person, other than the policyholder, who is injured on the insured property as a result of any accidental or unintentional discharge of the firearm.
HB24-1292 broadens the definition of “assault weapon,” which will include countless semi-automatic rifles and shotguns used for hunting, target shooting, and self-defense. The bill does not stop there, it will also ban common firearm parts and many components in the definition of “assault weapon” and “rapid-fire trigger activator.”
HB24-1349, the “sin” tax, levies a 9%, amended from 11%, excise tax on the gross taxable sales of firearms dealers, firearms manufacturers, and ammunition vendors from the retail sale in the state of any firearm, firearm precursor part, or ammunition and requires the excise tax revenue to be spent for crime victim support services, gun violence prevention, safe and lawful gun use, and enhancement of school safety. If passed, HB24-1349 will be placed on this year’s general election ballot in November.
HB24-1353 creates a duplicative state permitting system for federally regulated firearm license holders. It also adds additional conditions and requirements for dealers, random inspections, and severe penalties for violations. Federal Firearm Licensed (FFL) dealers are already required to be licensed by the federal government and are highly regulated.
Don’t forget to share this important alert with your family, friends, fellow sportsmen, and gun owners and ask them to email their state Senator. The Centennial State needs all its sportsmen and gun owners to take action to ensure the survival of our hunting, fishing, and trapping heritage.
