Tomorrow, Wednesday, January 14, 2026, the Maine Joint Committee on Judiciary will hold a work session on legislation that will place redundant and burdensome requirements on firearms retailers. Use the Sportsmen’s Alliance Take Action tool to email the committee members, urging them to Oppose LD 1821.
The Impact of LD 1821 on Maine FFLs
LD 1821 is a carryover bill that mandates FFLs install specialized security systems certified by specific third-party entities approved by the Department of Public Safety. Beyond infrastructure requirements, the bill would require the Department and the Office of Violence Prevention to develop a mandatory annual employee training program and would implement redundant, complex record-keeping protocols.
State Agencies Oppose Impractical Mandates
Notably, both the Maine State Police and the Department of Public Safety previously submitted testimony opposing this bill, citing its impracticality. Bills like LD 1821 unnecessarily drive up the cost of firearms and ammunition, making hunting and shooting much more expensive.
How to Participate in the Legislative Session
