Late Monday night, May 22, the Minnesota 2023 legislative session adjourned sine die. This means the regular legislative session is completed for the year. The 2023 regular session was quiet for sportsmen until the last month of the session when issues were added to the omnibus environmental policy and spending bills.
As previously reported, the House inserted and passed a wolf hunt ban amendment to House File 2310. The Senate companion, Senate File 2438, did not include any language regarding a wolf hunt ban. With these bills having conflicting language, they were sent to a conference committee to work out the final language. The final outcome was in favor of scientific wildlife management, with no wolf hunt ban included in the final bill signed into law by Gov. Tim Walz yesterday, May 23.
Many hunting and conservation organizations worked hard to keep the hunt ban out of the final compromise, and we thank members of the conference committee for listening to their constituents and hunting groups on this very important issue. In particular, a clear “shout out” goes to the Minnesota Deer Hunters Association for fighting every step of the way to keep the wolf hunt ban off the final bill.
Even though the 2023 legislative session is over, the Sportsmen’s Alliance will continue to monitor activities in the North Star State as you never know when issues that sportsmen need to be aware of may arise.
