The Nevada Senate Committee on Natural Resources has scheduled a hearing for a bill that would ban all bear hunting in the state. The measure, Senate Bill 82, will be heard on Thursday, March 7th at 1:30 P.M. in Room 1214 of the Legislative Building located at 401 S. Carson Street in Carson City.
Sportsmen should call members of the Committee today and urge them to oppose the bear hunting ban!
The bill was introduced after the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners denied a petition filed by anti-hunting organizations to ban bear hunting with dogs. Now, they are pushing a complete ban on all bear hunting.
“Unsuccessful in their attempt to stop bear hunting with dogs before the Wildlife Commission, animal rights and anti-hunting groups are now coming after ALL bear hunting in the state,” said Jeremy Rine, U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance In-House Counsel. “If successful here, sportsmen can be assured that these groups won’t stop—they’ll be back for more. Nevada sportsmen need to take action today to stop this bill.”
Nevada established its first bear hunting season in 2011 after studies showed the state’s bear population was sustainable and growing. The Nevada Department of Wildlife took a modest and measured approach to bear hunting and set very conservative hunt quotas for the bear seasons to balance bear management and ensure sustainable populations.
Senate Bill 82 would politicize wildlife management and would take hunting, a valuable tool for bear management, out of the Department’s hands. Bear hunting helps manage populations to reduce human-bear conflicts and to ensure bear populations remain healthy.
Take Action! – Nevada sportsmen should contact members of the Senate Natural Resources Committee TODAY and tell them to vote oppose Senate Bill 82.
