Last month, New Hampshire’s 2024 legislative session adjourned. This means the session has concluded for the year.
There were several sportsmen-related bills introduced this year. One important pro-sportsmen bill, HB 1186-FN, was sent to Governor Chris Sununu for his consideration.
If signed into law, HB 1186-FN, will protect the credit card purchase privacy of New Hampshire’s sportsmen by prohibiting merchant category codes from being assigned to the purchase of firearms, ammunition for use in firearms, and firearms accessories.
The following bills were defeated:
HB 1037 would have repealed the limited liability for manufacturers, distributors, dealers, or importers of firearms or ammunition, leaving them open to lawsuits based on the criminal misuse of a firearm by another.
HB 1102-FN would have criminalized the sale and breeding of brachycephalic dogs and any dog that could be claimed to have any birth deformity.
HB 1680 / SB 541-FN would have redefined retail pet stores to include anyone with a physical facility who “transfers” more than thirty (30) dogs per year at retail. The bill also capped these newly redefined “retail pet stores” to “transferring” the number of dogs at the same number “transferred” in 2023, prohibits the sale of the “retail pet stores” to only family members, AND required future “retail pet stores” to source dogs from ONLY animal shelters.
SB 346-FN would have prohibited the use of dogs while hunting coyotes.
SB 548-FN would have removed gray squirrels from the definition of game animals.
SB 577 would have instituted a 3-day waiting period between the purchase and delivery of a firearm, with limited exemptions.
Even though the 2024 legislative session is over, the Government Affairs (GA) team will continue to monitor activities throughout the Granite State. You never know when issues that sportsmen need to be aware of may arise. You can also view the bills the GA Team was monitoring on our interactive map.
Please share this message with your family and friends, as sportsmen throughout the state must continue to stay actively involved in defending our hunting, fishing, and trapping heritage for present and future generations to enjoy.
