The New Mexico House Agriculture, Water and Wildlife Committee will hear two anti-sportsmen bills this Friday, Feb. 27, at 8 a.m.
A final push from New Mexico sportsmen is needed to defeat both bills!
Coyote Contests (SB 253)
Senate Bill 253 would ban any organized event with the objective of killing coyotes for entertainment or prizes. The bill poses a significant threat to coyote management efforts in New Mexico by eliminating a management tool used by sportsmen and ranchers to control the population. The poor wording of the bill could also subject small groups of sportsmen to criminal prosecution who compete among themselves while hunting or trapping coyotes.
The bill has already passed the state senate!
Trapping Ban (HB 426)
House Bill 426 would essentially ban trapping in the state of New Mexico by outlawing all trapping activities on public lands. In addition, the measure would ban the trade of raw furs. Our oldest outdoor tradition, trapping serves a valuable role in wildlife management. Regulated trapping helps to reduce the occurrence of widespread disease due to overpopulation, mitigates damage done by growing populations and drives economic activity in the fur industry.
Take Action Today! All New Mexico sportsmen need to contact the members of the committee below to voice opposition to SB 253 and HB 426 today. Additionally, sportsmen are encouraged to demonstrate their opposition at the committee hearing at 8 a.m. on Friday morning. The meeting will be held at:
