California’s anti-sportsmen/anti-gun legislature is back at it again for 2024. On Tuesday, April 2nd, at 8:30 a.m., in room 2200, the Senate Committee on Public Safety is scheduled to hear two bills disastrous to sportsmen and gun owners.
A gun-control advocate’s only answer to gun violence is to add more gun control to restrict the law-abiding. Why? Because passing bills that slowly but surely strip the firearms freedom of law-abiding sportsmen is the key, at least from their perspective. California needs meaningful laws to reduce violent crime. Not laws purposely targeted to reduce lawful firearm ownership altogether, which is exactly what Senate Bill 1160 and Senate Bill 1253 do.
Please use the Take Action button to email the committee members and urge them to vote “No” on SB 1160 and SB 1253. Remind the committee that California’s law enforcement community strongly opposes these bills. We are sure law enforcement does not take this opposition lightly, and the committee should consider it.

SB 1160 requires ALL firearms kept in the state to be annually registered with the Department of Justice by the owner of the firearm(s) and to pay an unknown fee to maintain the registration system. Sportsmen and gun owners are required to register their firearms by July 1, 2025, if signed into law, or they may surrender them to local enforcement. Those who do not register their firearms will be guilty of an infraction punishable by a fine of $1,000.
SB 1253 prohibits an individual in California from possessing a firearm without a valid Firearm Safety Card. Current law requires sportsmen and gun owners to obtain a Firearm Safety Card to purchase or receive a firearm. SB 1253 amends this law to prohibit otherwise law-abiding individuals from possessing a firearm unless they obtain and continue to possess a Firearm Safety Card, which is required to be renewed every five years. Individuals under the age of 18 are prohibited from obtaining a Firearm Safety Card, therefore prohibiting them from possessing a firearm should SB 1253 pass.
Do not forget to share this important alert with your family, friends, fellow sportsmen, and gun owners, and urge them to contact the committee also. The Golden State needs all its sportsmen and gun owners to stay actively involved in the fight to protect hunting, shooting, and self-defense for future generations.
