On Monday, August 14, summer recess is over, and the legislature is back to work. Right out of the gate, the Senate Appropriations Committee is scheduled to hear Assembly Bill 28, the firearm and ammunition “Sin” Tax bill at 10:00 a.m. in room 2200.
As previously reported, AB 28 imposes an additional 11% tax on the gross receipt from the retail sale of any firearm, firearm precursor part, or ammunition and establishes the “Gun Violence Prevention, Healing, and Recovery Fund,” and the additional 11% tax will go towards funding.
On Monday, August 21, the committee will hear Assembly Bill 1587, the multi-housing bill that was a “bait and switch” that now requires specified entities that facilitate or process a payment card transaction to track the purchases of firearms and ammunition with a new merchant code. Despite the credit card companies stopping the implementation of this new merchant code, the gun control majority legislature is still pushing forward with AB 1587.
We are expecting both these bills to pass the Senate Appropriations Committee, as this committee is not one to turn down a gun control bill, and the next stop will be before the Senate. Please use our Take Action button to start emailing your state Senator TODAY, urging them to OPPOSE these two egregious gun control bills. Your state Senator needs to know that law-abiding gun owners are not responsible for the state’s gun violence issues and should not pay for the criminal activities committed by others.
